Truckstop News advertising sales manager Catherine Turner recently presented PJ’s proud proprietors Wendy and Allan Coxon with a special cut-glass trophy to celebrate their win.

“Since we took over in 2007 it has been a long, hard journey, and it is still very much work in progress for us here as we strive to make things even better for the drivers,” said a very happy Wendy at the presentation. “And we would like to thank them so much for voting for us again this year.”

The site has been subject to major refurbishment to bring it up to the standard the pair wish to achieve. For example, the individual shower and toilet facilities were recently redecorated, and are kept spotless by a conscientious team of cleaners.

Situated just one mile from Sudbury roundabout on the busy A50 M1/M6 link road, PJ’s Sudbury Services on the A515 is ideally situated to drivers who require good, safe stopover at a reasonable price. With a fuel station, well-stocked shop, parking for 20-30 vehicles, a bakery and, of course, its well-known transport café, PJ’s has everything drivers need for a rest, whether just a 45-minute break or an overnight stop.

The café offers a comprehensive menu, with all the usual favourites, plus vegetarian options. All meals are freshly prepared and cooked (guaranteed served in 15 minutes). It offers off-licence and bar sales, while the forecourt and café accept all the major credit and debit cards (major fuel cards are welcomed at the fuel station, and AdBlue and oil are also available there).

With increasing threat of personal attack and/or theft from their vehicles/trailers, police in the area are trying to deter truckers from sleeping in lay-bys on the A50. So parking up for a safe and secure break at PJ’s has to be the sensible option – especially at just £13.50 for long stay (up to two hours’ parking is free).

Drivers paying for long-stay parking already receive a free meal or breakfast and unlimited tea or coffee. But Wendy and Allan were so chuffed at winning the coveted title of Truck Stop of the Year, they rewarded them with a free three-course Christmas meal between December 12-22.

The drivers we spoke to were universal in their praise of PJ’s. Many said it harks back to the days of the much-loved transport cafés of old – but without the disadvantages associated with some of them, such as stodgy food and tepid tea!

Cleanliness is second nature to the staff, who work a variety of shifts, from early morning to late at night to ensure customers want for nothing. With all this (and a long wall in the cafe covered in pictures depicting the changing face of road transport over the last 50-years – to which drivers are welcome to add), PJ’s is a very worthy winner of the title of Truck Stop of the Year 2011.
